Welcome to Ava R-1 Elementary!

Welcome to the Ava Elementary School website.  Our elementary school consists of kindergarten through fourth grade and two preschools for 3 and 4 year olds.  In grades K-4, Ava has five classrooms per grade level and our class ratio is 1:19.  All students have a weekly rotation in classes of Art, Music, Physical Education, Library and Computer.  Counselors and a nutrition specialist also provide classroom instruction to students in grades K-4.

Our teachers have high expectations for our students.  We focus academically on reading and math skills along with developing tools for citizenship and life skills.

Our goal is to provide our young students with a solid foundation so they will be better equipped to handle the challenges of middle school.

We invite you to be a part of our team in educating the children to become productive citizens in an ever-changing world.  If you have questions please don't hesitate to come by or call me at any time.

Diana Premer, Elementary Principal

“Community Time” held every Wednesday
Community Time will be held each Wednesday morning from 8:15 until 9:00. The elementary students will hear guest speakers and watch performing artists present a short program. Our first program was a performance from Oksana Pavilionis. She demonstrated playing the violin and fiddle tunes. The second program was presented by our local “Scratches’ Pet Shop“. They spoke to the students about choosing the best pet for their lifestyle and the importance of being responsible and taking care of your pets.   We look forward to these programs each Wednesday. Please ask your child what they saw during “Community Time” this week.

Life Long Learners
One goal of every school is to equip students with the skills to become Life Long Learners. The teachers and staff at the Ava R-1 school district are also life long learners. Each Wednesday during Community Time, when students are enjoying guest speakers, teachers meet with each other to review our curriculum, look over student successes, and plan and set goals to help make improvements in the classroom.

Reading Counts Celebrations
Reading Counts is a reading program where students read and report on books. If a student passes the quiz over the book, they earn points. The computer tracks the books read and the total number of points the student earns. There will be a “Celebration” when the student earns 50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 points. The celebrations include fun things like playing Limbo, eating popcorn, having an ice cream sundae, and even bubble gum blowing contests. You can help your child by listening to them read a few minutes each night.

Lunch and Breakfast Prices have Changed
There has been a change in this year’s breakfast and lunches prices. The cost for a regular breakfast is $1.00. The cost for a regular lunch is $1.35. Buying an extra milk or one to go along with your sack lunch from home costs $.30. Adult lunches are $2.00 and adult breakfasts are $1.50. Students who qualify for reduced lunches will pay $.40 and breakfast will cost $.30. All lunch money should be sent to school in an envelope with the student and teacher’s name on the envelope.

Playground Walking Trail
Have you noticed our new addition on the 3rd & 4th grade playground? We have a new walking trail around the perimeter of the playground. The walking trail will be used by our students and teachers to increase our exercise minutes each day. We can even walk the trail when the playground is too muddy to play on! The walking trail was a project of fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Nelson, and her students. The trail was funded with grant money awarded to Mrs. Nelson and her students. A great big “THANK YOU” goes out to Mrs. Nelson along with our maintenance crew who put the trail down.

9th Avenue Traffic
This is just a reminder, there should not be any traffic on 9th Avenue (the street in front of the elementary) in the mornings or afternoons when buses are loading and unloading. Only buses and faculty and staff with parking permits are allowed to pull onto the street. Please notice the ordinance traffic sign at each end of the street. Drivers can be issued tickets for using this street at this time of the day. Parents should drop students off on 10th Avenue, in the back of the building. Middle school students should be dropped off in the middle school parking lot.
